Iowa GOP Lawmakers Try To Curtail Divorce, Worry It Makes Young Women More 'Promiscuous' (UPDATE)

Subhead: This is not from the Onion.

I’ve seen a lot of talk about why the GOP has been getting its ass handed to it in recent elections.  With all due respect, start here.

“I realize the history books have no record of a female presence on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day but why should that stop us from representing women in a war that affected them just as much as any man?”
Historical revisionism at its finest. I am so glad this isn’t real D:

I have a new picture for ridiculous things I see that make me sad.

UMMMM

The idiocy of this is breathtaking.

"Despite poll numbers showing the majority of Americans now support gay marriage, House Speaker John Boehner sent a strong message today authorizing the continued use of taxpayer funds to defend a federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman."

Because surely taxpayer money couldn’t be better spent elsewhere.

Newspeak Bullshit Alert: Public Transit

In the “fiscal cliff” idiocy that went down, the payroll exemption for monthly transit expenditures (through Transitchek and other programs) was raised from $125 to $240.  Of course, the “yay more free stuff” idiots are ecstatic over this, but what does it really mean?

Ask David Alpert.  He has a theory.

“Even if House Republicans just went along somewhat reluctantly with a Senate deal yesterday,” David Alpert wrote at Greater Greater Washington, “in approving this extension, they were now able to give many American workers a tax cut along with helping our cities function more effectively and ending one small example of the many ways government ‘picks winners and losers’ among transportation modes.

Oh really?  Because as far as I can tell:

1.  No one riding public transit in the United States of America pays full price for the cost of their ride.  Every ride is a losing proposition for the entity operating that ride.

2.  If the government isn’t picking “winners and losers” why is the subsidy only for public transit?  How about cars?  Bikes?  Walking?  Nope, they surely are picking winners and losers, and not only are they picking winners and losers, they’re making double winners out of already-winners.

It’s more newspeak.  By funding public transportation, the government isn’t picking winners and losers.  I’m sorry, but once the government funds something, they’re the winners, no matter how much you spin it.

Idiots.

'Wheel of Fortune' Contestant Loses After Mispronouncing Word | ABC News Blogs - Yahoo!

This is silly.

I could understand it if the G wasn’t already on the board, but now we’re nailing people for pronunciation?  Cool.  I can’t wait to hear how they handle immigrant folks who can’t pronounce English words properly.  Surely they’ll ding her, right?

Yeah.  I don’t think so either.

Ever read something so insane you feel like you’re being played and there’s no way the idiot that wrote it could possibly believe it?

This link is one of those occasions.

"Although the law doesn’t specifically cite an illegal price for gasoline, it does prohibit an “unconscionably excessive price” during an “abnormal disruption of the market,” according to Mr. Schneiderman’s office. In addition to “war” and “military action,” the law names “weather events” as a triggering event that would restrict such sharp price increases. A fatal storm that left much of the city without gas would certainly seem to qualify."

Attorney General Goes After Price-Gouging Gas Stations | Politicker

I simply don’t understand this.  Politicians couldn’t get to microphones fast enough in the wake of Sandy to decry “price gouging” but every single time I asked the question of “what’s the threshold for gouging,” I got no answer.  This is what drives me nuts about politicians; vague guidelines they can implement at their whim to punish people who they don’t believe are acting according to the best interests they see.

People have accused gas stations, home improvement stores (with generators) and grocery stores (with food) of gouging, but no one can say what gouging is.

Is it raising the price when the demand is highest and supply is most constrained?

Is it doing so to X percentage? If so, what is X?

Can a business legitimately raise their prices when their goods cost more or are worth more?

No.  Instead we hear vagueries like “unsconscionable” to describe the threshold.  Well, frankly, I don’t find raised prices unconscionable at any level, so who sets the standard for what is an unconscionable increase in the price of an item whose supply is constrained?  Or is it just whomever needs to catch some righteous wrath and make a politician look good that day?

Abandon All Hope: formerplanet: people (social justice bloggers) often cite statistics...

slide-to-the-right:

formerplanet:

people (social justice bloggers) often cite statistics that say that white people use welfare more than minority people do but then those same people (social justice bloggers) also harp on the idea of “checking [your] white privilege”

weird, huh?

Even weirder is that the same people who tell you most recipients of public assistance are white will call you racist if you think it should be cut back.

Apparently, you can have your idiotic cake and eat it too.

"All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the Big Bang Theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I’ve found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don’t believe that the Earth’s but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That’s what the Bible says."

The US Congress Anti-Science Committee | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine

Look; believe what you want, but honestly, if these are your beliefs (and you have every right to them) you should not be allowed anywhere near a committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Of course, I’d argue the wisdom of having such a committee at all, but fine, we have one.  Get your ass off it.

LA SHERIFF: FEDS INTERVIEW CALIF. FILMMAKER

They’re gonna do anything to pin the violence on this guy and exonerate the savages that did the deed.  That’s how they do it.

Every time the Islamists throw a temper tantrum, someone else has to be blamed, and in this case a guy that made a YouTube vid is the target.  A video, I might point out, that no one saw until the petulant children of the Islamic world got all butthurt over it.

Feelgood Bullshit: Bronx Zoo Free Wednesdays Stay

Free Wednesdays at the Bronx Zoo are saved.

But it took legislative wrangling before the new state budget was passed in Albany to keep the popular free family day funded for another three years.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo, is thanking local state Senator Jeff Klein and Assemblyman Jose Rivera for carrying the legislation through. Gov. Cuomo made it official by signing it into law recently.

“Saving the free day is essential to the mission of the zoo to educate families of all socioeconomic backgrounds on the incredible range of diversity of life on earth,” said WCS spokesman Calvelli.

Oh bullshit.  If the zoo was such an important educational facility, they wouldn’t nickle and dime the hell out of every person that visits.  Even in this article, they say a family of four pays $71 plus parking to visit.

Really?

And not for nothing, but two things come to mind:

1.  Wouldn’t the people paying $71 plus parking rather save a few bucks?  In other words, why not spread the costs among all visitors, instead of making 6 days worth of people pay for one.

2.  Why in God’s name is it $71 to go to the zoo?  Oh right, because everyone and their mother goes on Wednesday.  The free day.

Do you see the circle you create when you give handouts?
